Jaisalmer Fort
Rising over the city, Jaisalmer Fort — also called Sonar Quila, the Golden Fort — is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the few forts in India still lived in, with homes, shops and temples tucked inside its lanes. At sunset, when sunlight touches its yellow sandstone walls, the fort turns a deep gold — the same sight that inspired writer Satyajit Ray’s novel Sonar Kella. It’s about 1.5 km from Jaisalmer Railway Station, making it easy for every tourist to reach.

Patwon Ki Haveli
Patwon Ki Haveli is another must-visit place — a combination of five havelis known for their detailed sandstone craftsmanship, carved jharokhas and delicate wall paintings. Part of it now works as a museum, giving a closer look at the family that once lived here.

Nathmal Ki Haveli
Two sculptor brothers reportedly worked on opposite wings of this haveli without coordinating with each other — which is why the facade has small, deliberate differences worth spotting up close. It’s close to Jaisalmer Fort, Patwon Ki Haveli and the city’s busy shopping lanes, so most visitors cover all three together.
Local Food: Look for Rajasthani thali and mirchi pakoda nearby.
Salim Singh Ki Haveli
Salim Singh Ki Haveli is inspired by the graceful shape of a dancing peacock and is a popular stop during a heritage walk. With this visit, Jaisalmer Fort, Patwon Ki Haveli and Gadisar Lake can easily be combined.
Local Food: Try a makhania lassi and traditional sweets in the nearby market.
Gadisar Lake
Before the Indira Gandhi Canal reached Jaisalmer, this artificial lake was the city’s only source of water. Built by the Rawals of Jaisalmer, it’s surrounded by temples, monuments and chhatris, making it a great spot for photography — especially when the golden monuments reflect in the water at sunrise or sunset. Jaisalmer’s cultural festivals are also celebrated here, and a peaceful boat ride around the lake is a nice way to end the day.

Bada Bagh
Its royal cenotaphs and open desert surroundings make Bada Bagh a popular stop, particularly attractive around sunset.

Sam Sand Dunes

Desert National Park

Tanot Mata Temple
Also known as the “Vaishno Devi of the Thar,” this temple is looked after by the Indian Army rather than a temple trust. During the 1965 war, the Pakistani army dropped thousands of bombs near it — none of them exploded, and devotees still believe it was a miracle of Tanot Mata. Today, BSF jawans perform the daily prayers and rituals while also guarding the temple. Located about 120 km from Jaisalmer, it’s best visited as a dedicated day excursion.
Longewala War Memorial
About 40 km from Tanot Mata, the Longewala War Memorial marks the site of the 1971 Battle of Longewala, where Indian forces held off a much larger attack. It’s an important stop for anyone interested in India’s military history.
Jaisalmer War Museum
Located about 10–12 km from Jaisalmer city on the Jaisalmer–Jodhpur highway, this museum presents military history through battle memorabilia, aircraft, and vehicles, including items connected with the 1965 and 1971 wars.
Akal Wood Fossil Park
This park is home to fossilised wood that is millions of years old — an excellent addition for visitors aiming to enjoy unusual natural attractions.
Lodrawa
Once the capital of the Bhati rulers before Jaisalmer was founded, Lodrawa today is a quiet religious stop with ornate Jain temples and old ruins, easily combined with Kuldhara and other western Jaisalmer excursions.
